Gulf Coast Joint Venture
Initiatives - Laguna Madre Initiative

The Laguna Madre Initiative area encompasses five counties along the extreme lower coastal plain of Texas from the western shores of Nueces and Corpus Christi Bays to the mouth of the Rio Grande River, and three adjacent inland counties. The goal of the initiative is to provide wintering and migration habitat for significant numbers of redheads, scaup, northern pintails and other dabbling ducks, and year-round habitat for mottled ducks. The Laguna Madre Initiative Plan focuses on the two habitats that are of primary importance to waterfowl along the south Texas coast, historically hyper saline lagoons with associated sea grass beds and shallow freshwater wetlands on adjoining mainland and barrier islands.
